Purity quote

I was speaking to my Aunt about my modesty blogs and she began to share stories about my Great Grandfather.  He was a very good Christian man who loved going to church.  Each Sunday he would get all cleaned up and put on his Sunday suit, the only suit he owned.  She said that he always had a copy of his Sweet Psalmster in his pocket.  Out the door he would go, so thankful to go and worship God.  He obviously owned more clothes than just that one suit, but why didn’t he wear something else on occasion for more variety?

The way I was raised was not much different from the way it was for my Great Grandfather.  He had been taught to give God his best.  His first fruits, not the last.  That carried over to the way he dressed for church as well.  You see, he could have just put on his work clothes and worshiped God the same.  God loves us no matter what we wear.  However, that wasn’t his best.  That doesn’t mean that he didn’t worship God throughout the week when he was wearing his work clothes.  He worshiped God in all things he did every single day.

I have seen a drastic change in how people dress for church since my childhood.  Back then we were taught to wear our Sunday best.  Nowadays I see ladies who will dress up for dates, family events, girls nights out, to meet the President or someone else famous; but when attending church, many will wear anything they can find.  I have seen sweats, PJ bottoms, crumbled clothing, the list goes on and on.

I am not sharing this story to bash anyone who has done this.  I am just sharing that for our family, giving God our first fruits even in our clothing choices for Sunday worship are a reflection of where are hearts are.  Do we spend more time getting ready for a date then we do for our Lord?  Do we spend more time planning an outfit for an “important event” then we do for church on Sunday?

What does all this say about where our heart is?  It’s something to think about on this Modest Monday.  The following quote really spoke to me: “Purity requires modesty, an integral part of temperance.”

So what did I wear?

Undershirt: I had on a long halftee.

Sweater: Navy beaded sweater from the Dress Barn.  It was on clearance.
